This happened quite some time ago at the bookstore:

"I'm looking for the Lance Armstrong biography."

"It's not about the bike," I said.
(Which for you homegamers is the title of his most popular book.)

"No, it's about the cancer," said the customer, thinking they were bright.

At that point (if I were you) I would have widened my eyes, reached out to touch their arm and said with a look of shock, “Oh, my god! He has cancer?”

If they’re bright enough to pick up on the sarcasm, they’ve redeemed themselves. If not, you simply watch as they unfold even more hilarious material for you to post on lj. ;)
