“Look, Mrs. Wheeler, I’m trying to be nice here.”

“Don’t.”

“What?”

“Don’t be nice.”

“But why?”

“Because the world is not nice. It is complicated and it is messy. It is overflowing with arrogance and greed and uncertainty. It’s a lot of heinous shit. It’s a world where bad wins out every single time. Now maybe you’re too naïve to believe that, or too stupid to learn it, but if you believe in the good and mercy of others, you will always lose, you will always be the victim, and then you’ll learn, intern, you’ll learn.”

Clea Duvall, as Laura, in How To Make A Monster

(script by the director, George Huang)

Believe it or not, I actually agree with this in reference to certain stages of the psyche. *likes* Good to see you 'round.

And, of course, a strong argument could be made that, despite the world's malevolence and deep, dark pockets of ills, we're still obligated to be decent (if we want to be the change we want to see in the world) no matter what -- but now I'm just playing rhetorical tricks and gallivanting around inside my own head.

Look! A thought! Let's make it bounce through clouds on a pogo-stick!

If I'm not careful, I'll almost say that we are accountable for our actions, even if there's nothing to be accountable to but our own emptiness.

Are you being facetious, or are you simply using terminology I understand. I'm sooo blonde.
