And, of course, a strong argument could be made that, despite the world's malevolence and deep, dark pockets of ills, we're still obligated to be decent (if we want to be the change we want to see in the world) no matter what -- but now I'm just playing rhetorical tricks and gallivanting around inside my own head.

Look! A thought! Let's make it bounce through clouds on a pogo-stick!

If I'm not careful, I'll almost say that we are accountable for our actions, even if there's nothing to be accountable to but our own emptiness.
